Dermatology Treatment

Dermatologists can help with more than just dry skin and acne. IU Health Dermatology treats a variety of skin conditions ranging from pre-cancerous and cancerous conditions to fungal infections and cosmetics. Education and public health is also a primary focus of IU Health Dermatology efforts. Knowledge and prevention is the primary and most vital step to help prevent various skin conditions, such as preventing skin cancer through self-examinations and sun protection.

Phototherapy

Phototherapy is a treatment that utilizes ultraviolet light to treat various skin conditions. Phototherapy can be used to treat skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema while more specialized phototherapy - Blue Light therapy- can be used to treat pre-cancers and acne. During Blue Light therapy a light sensitive drug is applied to the skin as a liquid or cream. Depending on the treatment type, the drug remains on the skin for minutes to days before being activated by a specific wavelength of light to treat the skin condition.

Facial Peels

Facial peels can be performed as an outpatient procedure to reduce or eliminate the appearance of acne scarring, uneven pigmentation or photoaging related to precancerous skin lesions. Facial peels generally use an acid solution administered to the face to remove damaged outer skin layers while enhancing and smoothing the texture of the skin. Facial peels are safe when performed by an experienced dermatologist.

Dermatopathology

Dermatopathology is the evaluation of skin conditions and tumors through the use of a microscope. Sometimes, the criteria of certain skin conditions do not follow normal characteristics and does not allow a conclusive diagnosis. Therefore through Dermatopathology, a skin biopsy is taken and examined by a Dermatopathologist to view the skin disease and its cause at a cellular level.
