Employee Volunteerism

Aligning with our mission of service, Indiana University Health maintains an employee volunteer program, Strength That Cares, to foster a culture of engagement and volunteerism within the organization that positively impacts the health, development and well-being of employees and the communities we serve.

Through the program, IU Health promotes employee awareness and participation in volunteer opportunities that serve identified community needs and enhance quality of life for all citizens. In addition to community volunteer opportunities, IU Health regularly supplies targeted opportunities for employees to engage in community benefit activities that support our outreach priorities.

Signature Employee Volunteer Initiatives

Annual Day of Service

More than 1,600 IU Health employees joined the fight against childhood obesity during the third annual Day of Service on May 20, 2011. Community assets left behind focused on increasing access to safe, challenging places to play and included three KaBOOM! playgrounds, 12 enhanced playgrounds and 5 school gardens.

Signature Volunteer Project

In 2011, more than 800 IU Health employees engaged in the signature volunteer project—Kindergarten Countdown—serving as “classroom buddies” at summer camps aimed at better preparing at-risk children for success in kindergarten. With IU Health's support, the program—started by United Way of Central Indiana in 2007—was expanded across the Indianapolis Public School district and into 10 additional IU Health communities across the state.
